About the role
You'll develop advanced NLP systems that extract insights from legislative texts, political speeches, and policy documents. Leading our AI initiatives, you'll build tools that identify patterns across state policies, track bill progression, and generate comparative analyses that inform our journalism. Working alongside editorial and product teams, you'll create models that summarize complex legislation, detect political framing, and identify emerging policy trends. Your work will include designing knowledge graphs of political relationships, implementing semantic search capabilities, and building recommendation systems to personalize content delivery. This role requires balancing technical innovation with journalistic integrity.
About your background and skills
Deep expertise in natural language processing and machine learning, particularly for document understanding and text analysis. Experience implementing production ML systems with measurable impact. Strong software engineering foundation with proficiency in Python and MLOps practices. Background working with large language models and developing custom fine-tuning approaches. Understanding of information retrieval and knowledge management systems. Familiarity with political processes and policy analysis beneficial but not essential. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Commitment to building responsible AI that promotes factual information and balanced perspective.
