Pendulum is a cultural media company reimagining language learning.
About the company
We begin with a simple idea: language is the instrument of culture. To learn a new language is to learn a new way of seeing—to step into another perspective, another rhythm of life. But most tools reduce that process to flashcards, grammar drills, and gamified routines. But that’s not how language lives, and it’s not how people truly learn. We learn by immersion—by hearing a language in motion, seeing it in context, and using it to make sense of the world. We’re bringing that experience into a digital space.
With conversational voice AI and autonomous language agents, we build evolving, interactive environments where people learn by speaking, listening, and engaging—not just with the language, but with the culture it carries. Each learner steps into a dynamic narrative shaped around their interests, personality, and level—an experience where language and culture unfold together, in real time.
About the role
As the first and only Editorial Director for France, you'll define and lead the local editorial vision from the ground up, shaping how cultural depth, linguistic nuance, and immersive storytelling come together through completely novel product experiences. This foundational role offers wide creative latitude—you'll manage partnerships, lead content strategy, and navigate licensing deals with strong editorial instinct and a pulse on contemporary French culture.
You'll own and evolve Pendulum's editorial voice in France, creating a unique intersection where language learning seamlessly meets cultural immersion. Working closely with cultural tastemakers—including renowned chefs, innovative designers, celebrated writers, and influential restaurateurs—you'll transform their expertise into engaging, immersive language lessons while prototyping and experimenting with new formats across audio, visual, and interactive mediums to push beyond traditional editorial boundaries.
About your background and skills
We're looking for someone with 5+ years of editorial or content leadership experience who knows how to create cultural content that actually stands out. You should have a solid network and sharp instincts for what's happening in French culture right now—not what was cool six months ago. Experience with licensing agreements and editorial rights negotiations is key, since you'll be navigating those waters regularly.
You need to be bilingual in French and English, and you should be someone who can take a project from "hey, what if we..." all the way to launch, especially when things are moving fast and priorities shift. We want someone who's genuinely curious and ambitious, treats people well, and can hold strong opinions while staying open to being wrong.
